Child's room-how to decorate it:
- Depending upon the age of the child a bed or a cot would be required in the room. If there is a cot then generally the size is fixed. However, in case of a bed the size will vary according to the age of the child. One should keep the size larger than size of the kid to be able to utilize the bed for at least two to three years.
- In case of a cot the design can be of the parent's choice however, in case of a bed the color and design can be chosen by the parents in collaboration with the child.
- The material and design of the bed or cot should be such that it should be not very high and should not have any sharp edges for safety purposes.
- Flooring should be carpeting or throw able rugs which are soft cushioning for a child. Also, the colors should be dark and material washable.
- The drapery should be such that it should provide disconnection from outside world when required-especially for small children. This kind of thick drapery restricts outside light and noise during nap and sleeping time.
- Children should have a lot of storage space for toys, clothes etc. These should be reachable by the child so that children can be taught how to keep their room clean themselves. Also, this gives accessibility to the child to use and play with the toys themselves.
- Designing the room with a theme can be a good idea. This makes the room colorful. However in such a case the child's ideas should be given predominance to ensure that the theme is child's idea. This is because the room is to be used by the child.
- A play corner with a few plastic rocking chairs, slides etc. can be made in case the room has more space. This corner can be surrounded by floor level wall boards which can be used by the child to draw and paint. This corner can also have clay toys. A washable rug can be thrown on the floor. Basically a creative corner for the child.
- If the child is grown up enough to handle music system or a computer, these things can also be a part of the room. But for this another corner has to be allocated. This slot should have a study table large enough to put a computer and study area side by side. Also, a pin up wall board can be used to display the child's achievements and reminder notes pin ups.
- A television set should be avoided in a child's room to direct attention to the creative and playful side of the child.
Finally, if the child's room has an attached bath then it should be made in synchrony with the room and with the same playfulness in mind.
