The choice of window coverings depends on the following factors:

• Privacy: The privacy is the first reason on which the window covering depends. Generally windows are covered to protect the inhabitant’s privacy. In this case all type of curtains and blinds can act as a protection except for transparent curtains. Such sheer curtains can be used, provided they are supplemented by thick curtains overlapping them. The double set of rods with curtains can be of a great help in this case.
• Costing of the window coverings: The costing affects the type of window cover one uses.
  • There are varieties of fabric available in the market with a wide range of price categories.
  • Blinds fall in the more expensive category and do not look very good in houses. The latest optionfor bedroom window covers is wooden blinds. These do not look clinical like their plastic counterparts.
  • Filming the window or frosting the window is also another option. But, this makes the windows look bare and is only adequate for privacy protection and not light protection.
  • Frosting is not very expensive and long lasting; however stained glass windows and etched glass windows are expensive options.
• Where the window covering is used: The room or the location of the window is also a deciding factor in deciding the type of cover used.
  • In offices generally blinds are used as they give a professional look and are easy to maintain and match.
  • Houses usually sport curtains and in bedrooms double curtains are used for light protection and privacy. Sheer curtains for the day and thick ones for napping and sleeping hours for protection from sunlight.
  • Toilets and kitchens have blinds or only frosting on the window glass for privacy and adequate sunlight.
  • Glass doors opening inside the house into living areas can have etched or stained glass for décor and beauty.
  • Wooden blinds can be used in living and play rooms for protection from light and give a smart look in living area.
• Kind of light entering the room: The lighting of the room also affects the type of window cover. Bright sunshine even in bathrooms and kitchens needs to be shielded with the help of blinds. However, in bedrooms if there is lack of sunshine due to the direction of the room the sheer curtains can be avoided.
• Height of the window: The height and the size of window also decide the type of window cover used. For instance, for a very high and broad window, of the size of an entire wall, cannot be covered with wooden blinds even if it is the living room. It would look strange. The aesthetics of the window should be considered before deciding the window covers used.
