How To Get Rid of Guns?

Today the only solution to minimize the murder rate in the United States is to ban guns. Although couple of months ago many politically influential people in Brazil made great efforts to pass an initiative doing just that last month, but in the end almost two thirds of Brazil's voters rejected the proposal. For most of the Americans it is quite difficult to imagine what Brazilians are facing, for the most recent detailed numbers, the U.S. murder rate was 5.5 per 100,000 people in 2004.

However, Brazilians have a right to be unconvinced that more gun control is the only solution visible. Since 1940, there have been many strict licensing laws that have been in effect in Brazil. As many as eighteen gun-control laws and regulations were imposed during the period from 1992 to 2003. Although, many rules were extremely restrictive: For instance, a 1997 law required anyone applying for a firearm license to have a psychological test and knowledge of operation of firearms, and a 1999 law limited every person to two handguns. But murder rates rose every year from 1992 to 2002, despite new restrictions on gun ownership being continually imposed. In total it was a sad increase of forty one percent.

Those who believe that there should be greater restrictions on firearms availability and ownership:

  • A great majority of people in the United States do not own guns.
  • The Gun control legislation reduces the possibility of violent crime.
  • Guns are generally more fatal and dangerous to the owners than to intended targets because most gun related deaths are a result of domestic violence, accidents, and suicides.
  • Guns are the tool for more effective method of killing than other varieties of weapons, and their elimination would lower rates of death and injury.
  • Guns are basically the devices designed to kill, raise the level of violence in any disagreement between people, which results in the situation of lawlessness.

Today the situation is this that everyone wants to take guns away from criminals. People are really fed up of crime happening all around but basically the problem is that the law-abiding citizens, those who have followed the licensing and registration rules, are disarmed, not the criminals. This actually allows the growth of potential victims more vulnerable and increases crime.

Out of all violence's, gun violence is like a raging fire. According to the reports of FBI, the reality is that there were only 163 cases of justifiable self-defense out of more than 30,000 gun deaths in 2003 and the heat for this raging fire is ready access to guns, and yet gun-owners are not held responsible for leaving loaded firearms where children and teens have easy access to them.
