What is Baking soda?

The chemical Sodium bi carbonate is commonly known as baking soda. This chemical is most commonly used in cooking where rising affect is required in cakes and dough. This chemical reacts with food to release carbon dioxide and hence the dough rises.

Why use baking soda?

Baking soda has many uses since it is considered a relatively safe chemical. Its environment and heath friendly properties make it a very useful ingredient when it comes to not only cooking but also in terms of cleaning purposes. It is a very mild abrasive. It has alkaline properties and is very inexpensive in nature. Most f the packaging of baking soda is in a biodegradable material. It can be brought in bulk, thus saving packaging cost further. It has no phosphate and chlorine. Also it does not scratch surfaces which make it a good cleaning agent.

Cleaning properties of sodium bi carbonate and where it can be used:

  • Baking soda when sprinkled at the bottom of dustbins kills the odor and also acts as a natural cleaner when the bin is washed.
  • The baking soda unclogs the drain pipes if it is poured in it and then washed off with water. If the water used is warm then the affect of cleansing and unclogging is even better.
  • Bathtubs and wash basins can be cleaned with baking soda as it is a natural cleanser and does not leave residual scratches or strong odors.
  • Baking soda mixed can replace cleansing and disinfectant phenyl used in water used for mopping. The best part is that this not only gives clean floors, is totally environment friendly but also has no strong smell like phenyl.
  • Combs and hairbrushes and any kind of hair clips can be cleaned with baking soda mixed with hot water and do not leave any trace of oil or dirt in them.
  • Clothes can be cleaned and made to look brighter by adding a dash of baking soda in the water along with the regular detergent used to wash them.
  • Greasy corners can be cleaned with baking powder paste in water. This paste on a soft scrub can be used to clean the grease off. These greasy stains can even be inside a microwave or oven.
  • If the carpet is stinking sprinkle some baking soda on it. After a while using a vacuum or brush will rid the carpet of its smell. Basically the soda absorbs the smell and dirt.
